The goal of the program is to work with youth from the ages of 6 to 18 years of age. We will also, on a case by case basis, work with young adults under the age of 25 years of age. We will do our best to support the philosophies of: “No Child Left Behind” and “It Takes a Village,” to develop the youth in our program. We know the special challenges that we face with the socio – economic factors that affect the children and teens in this community. Our plan is to be a support system for parents to ensure their child’s success in every facet of their life. We aspire to become the elite programs of its kind, to be considered the best by all in the D.C. Parks and Recreation Center System, by city government officials, educational administrators, the local media, and most of all by the children and parents we serve.
The “Boys to Men” program is designed to gain the trust of the participating youth and their parents to allow the available supports needed for that child to achieve success. An assessment will be done on an individual basis with the child and parent/parents’ involvement. Our aim is to learn the talents, dreams, goals, and aspirations of each youth. A path will be developed with all parties concerned to enhance their opportunity to accomplish their personal goals. A mentor of the” Boys to Men” program will go to the school of each child, with parent’s approval, to become familiar with their counselor and teachers to inform them of the program’s additional support available to the student if desired. Accomplishments of the child can be rewarded and any disciplinary problems or grading issues can be addressed immediately. Parents will be encouraged to contact the program about any changes in the child’s world, good or bad. We envision our role to be an extension of the family unit and would like to share in the youth’s joys and pains. It is our goal to treat all children with love and care unilaterally.
